In 2009, I defended my thesis on modernity, nationalism and gender in Iran between the two world wars from a conceptual historical perspective. The analysis focused on how intellectuals wrote about the modern Iranian nation and what role they imagined women and minorities would have in it.
I was involved in starting the Human Rights program in Lund and have taught at all levels about everything from the French Revolution, decolonisation, to the sociology of genocide. The global perspectives and the emergence of the international system, military interventions in the Middle East, nuclear technology, sanctions, mediation and Track II projects have been some of the themes and perspectives I have worked with.
I have also worked with foreign policy analysis, for the EU (2009-2013 EU Institute for Security Studies) and later as Head of the Swedish Institute of International Affairs' Middle East and North Africa Program (2018-2025).
